It is estimated that 7% of illegal immigrants die whilst trying to flee their countries. In 2000, 14 Mexicans were found dead from dehydration in the Arizona Desert after they were abandoned by their smugglers. The number of African immigrants who die trying to reach Europe via the Straights of Gibraltar has risen by 200% in the last 5 years.
