Fed up with the conditions in which they live and the long time it takes to process their applications for asylum, large numbers of immigrants flee the detention centres to look for work on the black market. Once this happens there is no way to trace them, making the task of investigating the problems of illegal immigration more difficult. In Britain alone, nearly a quarter of a million immigrants have disappeared.
