The term "refugee" is defined by the UN 1951 Convention as a person who flees from their country because of "a well founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality or political opinion." It makes no mention of the extreme poverty which forces many immigrants to leave their countries. These are considered economic immigrants and are therefore not entitled to asylum.
