For many illegal immigrants the only way to enter another country is by paying large sums to criminal gangs. In Mexico, smugglers charge about $1,900 to take someone into the US and horror stories abound. In 2000 the leader of a Mexican smuggling ring was jailed for life for holding twenty illegal immigrants hostage for ransom, beating, raping and torturing them.
